Mosaic Task Force
Contact: The Rev. Meredyth Albright
The Mosaic Task Force of the Diocese of Fond du Lac is the body of laity and clergy who are committed to helping the Church become more hospitable in an increasingly diverse world; and become more aware of issues of structural and institutional racism. In order to do so, the committee is charged with at least two functions:
- Provide for the requisite Anti-Racism Training for clergy per the Canons;
- Facilitate ongoing charitable and respectful conversation across differences of race, ethnicity, culture, politics, etc.
The task force got its start with a desire by Bishop Matt to have the diocese of Fond du Lac comply with national church requirements of offering anti-racism training to clergy and laity of the diocese. Bishop Matt initially talked with Deacon Sue Burman and Mother Meredyth Albright regarding formation of a committee to address the need for anti-racism (dismantling racism) training; and to make people aware of, and sensitive to, all unique human traits and defining characteristics. The working name of the committee was “The Otherwise Committee.” Members, both lay and clergy, were added to the committee and the name of Mosaic Task Force was selected in January, 2016.
Tasks at Hand
The task force is currently involved in two projects. The first is the sponsorship of a program, “Embracing our Differences,” during a meeting of each deanery during May, 2016. The program will be presented by Laura Smyth, an Appleton resident who is an attorney, educator and facilitator specializing in conflict resolution. A simultaneous project is the development of a training program for clergy on “the Church’s teaching on racism” per the Canons of the Episcopal Church – III.6.5.(g).(4) and III.8.5.(h).(4). Our hope is that eventually such training can be offered to laity and congregations.
