Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD)
Contact: The Rev. Dcn. Sue Burman email@example.com
ERD works in partnership with the worldwide Church, ecumenical agencies and local organizations to save lives and strengthen communities around the world. Programs work toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals, which aim to cut extreme poverty in half by 2015 and focus on the following areas:
- Alleviating Hunger and Improving Food Supply
- Creating Economic Opportunities and Strengthening Communities
- Promoting Health and Fighting Disease
- Responding to Disasters and Rebuilding Communities
In August 2013, the Executive Council approved the diocese's participation in ERD's Disaster Preparedness Initiative which works with dioceses to increase their resilience and ability to recover quickly from disasters. The program is building a national volunteer and skill database called Ready to Serve, holding local and regional trainings, and assisting dioceses with coordination and planning.
The Resource Library includes disaster response tools and stories from dioceses and parishes, allowing best practices to be shared throughout the Church. The Lamplight newsletter shares articles about how the Church is preparing for and responding to disasters.
